Man Drowns in quarry near Tipton
Tipton, Iowa – Cedar County authorities Sunday evening recovered the body of Stanley Nicol, 28, of Davenport, who drowned while swimming in the Cedar Valley Quarry about eight miles west of here Sunday afternoon.

Nicol disappeared about 3:30 p.m. and his body was recovered by a team of skin divers about 6:30 p.m., according to Cedar County deputy sheriff George Miller. Nicol was swimming with several friends when the accident occurred.

Nicol was swimming in an authorized swimming area when the accident occurred. There are no lifeguards on duty at the county-owned recreational area. (Des Moines Register, Des Moines, IA, August 23, 1976)

Davenport Man Falls From Ledge, Drowns in Quarry
Tipton – A 28 year-old Davenport man drowned Sunday in the Cedar Valley quarry about ten miles southwest of here.

Authorities said Stanley Spencer Nicol had been swimming with friends Sunday afternoon. Shortly before 4 p.m. he fell from a rock ledge into about 60 feet of water. His body was recovered about 6 p.m. by divers from Tipton, Iowa City and West Branch.

Fire departments from Tipton, West Branch, Coralville and Solon also were at the scene to aid in the search.

Nicol is the second victim from the Quad Cities area to drown in the quarry in the last six weeks.

Witnesses said several hundred people were swimming in the quarry Sunday afternoon when Cedar county sheriff’s officers arrive on the scene and ordered everyone from the water. The officers said someone had disappeared and dragging operations were initiated.

The quarry is a popular swimming hole in the area. Under the jurisdiction of the Cedar county conservation board, the quarry was closed to swimmers at one time because of a drowning, but has gradually been restored to public use.

Cedar county authorities imposed an 8 p.m. curfew on the area recently after disturbances in the area. (Cedar Rapids Gazette, Cedar Rapids, IA, August 23, 1976)

Stanley Nicol
Colona, Ill. – Stanley Spencer Nicol, a former Estherville resident, drowned Sunday near Clinton. He was a 1967 graduate of Estherville High School.

Services for Mr. Nicol, 28, are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Fairman Funeral Home’s chapel in Greenrock, Ill. Burial will be in Bates Cemetery, rural Colona, Ill.

Mr. Nicol was employed by Don’s Barbar Shop, Davenport, at the time of his death.

He is survived by his father, Stanley Nicol, who is hospitalized in Silvis, Ill.; and three sisters, Mrs. Ronald LeMastr, Colona, Mrs. Gregory Kruse, Glendale, Ariz., and Mrs. Phillip Smith, Pacific, Mo.
