Estherville – Services for Vernon (Pepper) Martin, 71, of rural Estherville will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 20 at the First Presbyterian Church in Gruver with the Rev. Neal Armstrong officiating. Interment will be held at East Side Cemetery, Estherville. He died Tuesday, Sept. 17, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 19 at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

He was born on September 6, 1925 in rural Ringsted, he son of William and Nellie May (Van Horsen) Martin. At a young age, he moved to rural Gruver with his parents. He received his education in the Gruver schools, graduating from Gruver High School in 1943. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Goldsberry on January 12, 1947 at Carolyn’s parents’ farm home. He has farmed all his life and has raised pure-bred Hereford cattle for 45 years.

He was a member of the Gruver Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder for many years. He was a member of the Emmet County Farm Bureau, served as past vice president and president, past voting delegate. He also was the Bureau’s membership campaign manager and led the state in Farm Bureau memberships. He was a member of the North Star Masonic Lodge #447.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Estherville; one daughter, Cheryl Ganzer of Ames; two sons, Kevin of Rapid City, S.D., Dale of rural Estherville; five grandchildren; three sisters, Ardis Carey of Estherville, Opal Marley of Sandpoint, Ind., and Mrs. Edwin (Maytha) Madison of Estherville; one brother, Argil Martin of Sarasota, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 19, 1996)
