Estherville – Funeral services for Roscoe H. Waterman, 70, of Estherville will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at United Methodist Church in Estherville with the Reverend Lynn A. Potter officiating. Interment will be held at Oak Hill [East Side] Cemetery in Estherville with full military rites by VFW Post 3388, American Legion Post 91 and AMVETS Post 3391, all of Estherville. He died on Friday, Oct. 26, 2001 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. today at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

Roscoe was born on May 12, 1931 in Estherville, the son of Howard and Nellie (Burkart) Waterman. He received his education in the Estherville schools, graduating from Estherville High School in 1949. Roscoe also attended Morningside College in Sioux City. He served in the United States Army from February of 1952 through January of 1954 during the Korean War.

On Feb. 20, 1955 Roscoe was united in marriage to Marilyn Stoddard at the United Methodist Church in Estherville. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Estherville where he was employed by Fagre’s Construction. On Aug. 10, 1957 he began working for the City of Estherville on the Estherville Police Department. He served on the Estherville Police Department for twenty-eight years.

Roscoe retired from the department on May 1, 1985 with the rank of Captain. For hobbies he enjoyed reading, gardening, fishing, working on his computer and polishing rocks.

Roscoe was a member of the United Methodist Church in Estherville where he had served on various boards of the church. He was a life member of the Iowa State Police Association, Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police and Peace Officers. He was also a life member of the Second (Indian Head) Division Association.

He was a lifetime member of John W. Brawford VFW Post 3388 in Estherville where he previously served as Commander and held various other offices in the Tenth District, Department of Iowa V.F.W.

In 2000 Roscoe organized AMVETS Post 3391 in Estherville and was a lifetime member of the Post. He was a member of Maurice Doyle American Legion Post 91 in Estherville and held various other offices within that organization over the years. He was a member of the V.F.W. MOC (Military Order of the Cooties) Pup Tent 31.

In 1963 he was instrumental in the organization of Emmet County Public Employees Credit Union in Estherville, which is now known as Iowa Northland Credit Union. Roscoe served as a Charter Board of Directors member from August 1963 until the time of his death. He was also a long time volunteer for Telecare, a local community service program for telephoning the elderly, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

Roscoe is survived by his wife, Marilyn Waterman of Estherville; two daughters, Diane Lavender and her husband, Richard of Estherville and Karen Leffel and her husband, Ronald of Estherville; one son, Kevin Waterman and his wife, Sandra of Sioux Falls, S.D.; seven grandchildren, Benjamin, Robert and Mary Katherine Lavender, Philip Leffel, Michael, Matthew and Elizabeth Waterman; two step-grandchildren, Daniel and Scott Lavender; one brother, Darrel Waterman Salter and his wife, Mary of Batesville, Ark; one sister, Bertha Williams and her husband, Michael of Spanaway, Wash.; one half-brother, Alan Waterman of Decatur, Ill. and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Olive Dunlop and Nancy Krabbenhoeft and two brothers, Fredrick (who died in infancy) and Charles. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 29, 2001)
