Estherville – Funeral services for Kathryne E. [Elizaberth] Sidles, 94, of Estherville will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16 at the United Methodist Church in Estherville with the Rev. Lynn A. Potter officiating. Interment will be held at the East Side Cemetery in Estherville. She died on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003 at the Good Samaritan Center in Estherville.Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Henry-Olson-Furhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.
Kathryne was born on May 3, 1909 in Greene County, the daughter of Percy Matthew and Emeline Mary (Peters) Jackson. In 1920 she moved with her family to a farm in Martin County, Minn. She attended country schools in Iowa and Minnesota through the eighth grade. Then she attended high school in Dunnell and Petersburg, where she graduated in 1925.
Later Kathryne attended Mankato State Teachers College. After her graduation from college she taught school in Huntington and Martin County, Minn.
On Sept. 1, 1930, she was united in marriage to William R. “Bill” Sidles in Estherville. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Estherville where they began raising their family. Kathryne worked with Bill at their store, Sidles Grocery.
Later she was employed as a bookkeeper at Joyce Lumber Company in Estherville for ten years. After Bill’s death in 1966, Kathryne served as Residence Hall Director of Cornell College in Mount Vernon; Navajo Methodist Mission School in Farmington, N.M.; and Rd Bird Mission School of Beverly, Kan.
After her retirement she spent several winters in Scottsdale and Mesa, Ariz. She returned to Estherville in 1983.
Kathryne was a member of the United Methodist Church in Estherville where she had served as a Sunday school teacher and Superintendent. She was also past president and a lifetime member of United Methodist Women; member of the Alpha Club; Estherville Women’s Club and the Circles and Quilting Unit of the United Methodist Women.
Kathryne leaves behind a son, Craig William Sidles and his wife, Mary of Flagstaff, Ariz.; daughter Janet Ann Schacherer and her husband, James of Estherville; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and one brother, Warren Jackson of Washington, D.C.
She has been preceded in death by her husband, three great-great grandchildren; and her parents. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 14, 2003)
