Heart Attack Fatal to John Rogers
John L. Rogers, 76 long time resident of the Estherville area died suddenly at 4:30 p.m. of a heart attack at his home yesterday. [April 13. 1956] Mr. Rogers, 76, had suffered a blood clot on the brain two and a half years ago and was hospitalized at that time for three weeks in Rochester, Minn.
Since that time Mr. Rogers had learned to get along first with a walker then with a cane until recently becoming ill with the flue.
He was born May 5, 1879, in Dunlap and was united in marriage to Myrtle Byers, also of Dunlap, November 21, 1900.
Mr. Rogers farmed in Illinois following his marriage and went to Emmet county in 1912 where he farmed until he became steward at the Emmet County Home 12 years ago. He retired two years ago and moved to his home in Estherville.
Surviving are his widow and three children, Mrs. Ben Roach of Estherville, and Justin and Leslie Rogers both of Spirit Lake; two brothers, Elmer of Estherville and Logan of Chariton; seven grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister and six brothers.
Mr. Rogers was a member of the First Presbyterian church and of the Izaak Walton League.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Presbyterian church, the Rev. Thomas G. Melton officiating.
Friends may call at Sternborg Funeral home from Sunday morning and until time of services Monday. Burial will be in Eastside cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 14, 1956)
From the Dunlap paper: Mr. Rogers parents were William H. Rogers and Jeanette E. Wakefield Rogers of Dunlap.
It might be of interest to friends of the Rogers to know that Mrs. Alice Byers Harlan is with Mrs. Rogers and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Rogers live in Estherville. They are all formerly of Dunlap.
