J. Russell Planting the son of Sieger and Velma (Jacobs) Planting was born April 13, 1930 on a farm near Cylinder, Iowa. He died on Monday, August 23, 2010 at the Spencer Hospital in Spencer, Iowa at the age of 80.

He received his education in Halfa, Maple Hill and Gruver schools, graduating from Gruver High School.

On December 3, 1950, he was united in marriage to Jean Higgins in Estherville. Russell served in the US Marines from 1951 - 1953. Following his discharge from the military, he worked for the Estherville Police Department, Brinks Oil Company, John Morrell's, and drove for Pepsi. For hobbies, Russell enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and especially spending time with his family.

He was a member of United Methodist Church in Estherville.

Left to cherish Russell's memory are his wife, Jean; sons, Don Planting; Steve Planting and his wife, Jo all of Estherville; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Rozella Swalve and her husband, Andy; Rojean Jacobsen and her husband, Ronnie; and one brother, Bob Planting.

He has been preceded in death by his parents.
