Emmett, Idaho – Robert M. [Milton] Bevan, 83, of Garden Valley, Idaho, formerly of Estherville, died on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002 at his home after an extended bout with cancer.

No funeral services are pending for Bevan per his request. Arrangements were made through Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmet, Idaho.

Robert was born on July 31, 1918 in Estherville where he was reared and educated. After high school he attended a junior college in Estherville.

He joined the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He was inducted into the Army on May 6, 1941 and was honorably discharged on June 1, 1945.

Robert volunteered to be in the Rangers. He saw action as a sniper in Algeria and Tunisia, where he silenced a machine gun at 1,350 yards; as a section leader in Sicily and a front line mail orderly in Naples, Foggia and Rome-Arno. He fought in Anzio where 1,500 men went and only 97 returned. He was awarded five bronze stars, a unit citation, good conduct medal and two purple hearts. After his discharge he returned to Iowa.

He married Louise Miller in 1947. They moved to Seward, Alaska and lived there for seven years and moved to Seattle, Wash. in 1954. He worked as a shipwright there. They divorced in 1961.

He then moved to Outlook, Wash. in 1982 and in 1994 he moved to Garden Valley.

Robert enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting and feeding and watching the wildlife in the wintertime. He also enjoyed drying a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Robert was a life member of the VFW and in Seattle was involved in the Masonic Lodge and a Shrine Club.

Robert is survived by three sons: Bob Bevan and Randy Bevan of Garden Valley and Tim Bevan of Flagstaff, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; three great grandchildren and one sister, Ann Spicer of Denver. Colo.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
