Motorcycle accident results in one fatalilty
Marlon Moffitt, 44, of Estherville died of head injuries after he rear ended William Jensen, Jr. 29, of Estherville Friday near Ringsted.
Ringsted – On Friday, Nov. 16 at approximately 7:30 p.m. the Emmet County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call of an accident involving two motorcycles on the northwest edge of Ringsted.

At the scene it was determined that a motorcycle driven by William Jensen, Jr., 29 of Estherville was northbound on N60 coming to a stop sign when another motorcycle driven by Marlon Moffitt, 44, from Estherville, also northbound, came up behind and rear ended Jensen’s motorcycle. The drivers were riding together.

As a result of the accident, Moffitt sustained head injuries and was transported to Avera Holy Family Health in Estherville by the Ringsted Ambulance. From Avera, Moffitt was life flighted to McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. Jensen was uninjured.

Due to the injuries, Moffitt died Saturday, Nov. 17 at McKennen.

Jensen was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated (O.W.I.) and transported to the Emmet County Jail.

The accident remains under investigation by the Emmet County Sheriff’s Department.

Estherville – Funeral services for Marlon “Moe” Moffitt, 44, of Estherville will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21 at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Chapel in Estherville with the Reverence Donna Van Langen officiating. He died on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

Moe was born on May 8, 1957 in Estherville, the son of James and Carol (Barfoot) Moffitt. He received his education in the Estherville schools. He received his education in the Estherville schools.

Following the completion of his education, Moe was employed in the drying department of a local processing plant in the former Estherville Creamery building. In 1975 he moved to Texas and travelled extensively throughout the state working for a company that erected communication towers.

In 1978 he returned to Estherville to make his home. He began working at Estherville Foods and was employed in the maintenance and refrigeration departments and continued to work there until the time of his death.

For recreation Moe enjoyed motorcycling, skydiving, sailing, playing pool and downhill skiing.

Moe is survived by his parents, Jim and Carol Moffitt of Estherville; two sisters, Jacqueline Soat of Estherville and Holly Van Langen and her husband, Greg of Estherville; two nephews, Jamie Soat and Josh Van Langen, both of Estherville; one niece, Jacey Soat of Estherville; numerous aunts and uncles and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Clarence and Gladys Moffitt; maternal grandparents, Earl and Beatrice Barfoot; one uncle, Robert Barfoot and one aunt, Norraine Tusler. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 19, 2001)
