Jay [Smith] Mitchell Dies Suddenly
Fred Hendershot received a telegram Tuesday morning from G.G. Gardner, Los Angeles, California, announcing the sudden death of Jay Mitchell Monday afternoon at 3:30 of cancer of the stomach.

Mr. Mitchell was city marshall in Estherville for several years and until last fall when he resigned to accompany his daughter Verne to California, and to join his wife who went there a year ago. His death following so soon after that of Miss Verne casts a gloom over this community in which the family lived many years and were most highly respected. The heartfelt sympathy of friends here go forth to the doubly sorrow stricken wife and mother. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, April 9, 1913)

John S. Mitchell, a former resident of Estherville and well known to many here died of cancer of the stomach and heart trouble at Los Angeles Monday, of last week. He was marshall at Estherville at one time. (Emmetsburg Palo Alto Tribune, Emmetsburg, IA, April 16, 1913)
