Verne [Onyz] Mitchell Dead
Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Mitchell Dies in California
Sick Only a Short Time
Family Had Recently Moved to Los Angeles – Death Occurred Sunday [February 16, 1913] Morning
The William Foshier family received a telegram Sunday conveying the sad news of the death of Miss Verne Mitchell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Mitchell who recently moved from Estherville to Los Angeles. The receipt of the sad news was not a surprise, however, as it had been known since early in January that her death was expected at any time. She was taken sick at Iowa City while attending school there. She came here to spend Thanksgiving with her father who had not yet left Estherville and he persuaded her not to return to school. She remained here until December and Mr. Mitchell accompanied her to Los Angeles where Mrs. Mitchell had been for some time. After arriving there eminent physicians were consulted and they advised an operation. She went to the hospital and the operation was started but no completed. It was found she had cancer of the bowels and there was no help whatever for her. This operation was made and the facts of her case learned on January 7th, from that time she gradually failed.

Miss Mitchell was twenty-two years of age at the time of her death and had made her home in Estherville with her parents for twelve years. She was one of the brightest and handsomest young ladies of Estherville and it seems cruel that her life could not have been spared. The Mitchell family have many friends in Estherville who will regret to learn of her untimely death. Funeral services will be held at Los Angeles today and interment made there. Succumbs to Deadly Cancer
Miss Verne Mitchell Dies After Weeks of Intense Suffering
Interment at Los Angeles
She Was One of Estherville’s Most Popular Young Ladies and Will Be Sadly Missed
Miss Verne Mitchell, formerly of this city, died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Mitchell, in Los Angeles, California, Sunday morning at two o’clock.

About three weeks ago she was to be operated on for tumor but when they were ready to operate found the intestines covered with cancerous growth. They did not operate on her nor did they tell her what her trouble was. The dear patient sufferer thought until the last that she would recover and would feebly plan with her sister, Inez, what they would take to the “Iowa Picnic” to be held there.

Miss Verne had one of the sweetest and most lovable dispositions of any person whom it has been our pleasure to know and it seems too sad that one so ambitious and full of bright plans for the future should be cut off in the vigor of life, but we should not question the works of our Lord but say, “Thy Will be Done.”

Verne Mitchell was born at Rockford, Iowa, twenty-two years ago [May 24, 1891] and moved with her parents to this city when but a mere child. She attended the schools here and graduated from the high school in the class of 1908 when but seventeen years old. She succeeded in obtaining a first grade teachers’ certificate but on account of her age was not allowed to teach until the following spring. She then secured a school near Ringsted. The next years she taught to miles east of here and the following year taught the fourth grade at the Jackson building. She was so thorough and competent that she was again elected but did not accept because she planned on studying for four years at the Iowa state university. She left here in the fall for that place but on account of ill-health had to leave her studies and with her father left for Los Angeles, where he mother had gone in the summer preceding.

While teaching here she was also organist at Grace Episcopal church. Being an excellent musician she was sought by all who knew her to help at entertainments and willingly did so whenever it was within her power.

There are left to mourn her death her parents, and a sister, Mrs. Mel Brown, who were with her during her illness. The remains were interred at a cemetery in Los Angeles, California, Tuesday afternoon. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, February 19, 1913)
