LOCATION: ESTHERVILLE, IowaPhyllis Gwendolyn (Beck) Lyle, the daughter of George and Lila (Mitchell) Beck, was born July 4, 1919, in Armstrong, Iowa. Phyllis passed away Monday, June 11, 2012, at Rosewood Manor in Estherville, Iowa at the age of 92.
She received her education Armstrong and a graduate of Armstrong High School with many honors in vocal and instrumental music.
On September 16, 1938 she was united in marriage to Roy Roland Lyle. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Estherville and Royce and Lynette were born. Phyllis was a beloved employee of Lincoln Elementary School for approximately 30 years and continued to fill in well into her 80's. She was a teacher's aide. Some of Phyllis' favorite activities included working with her dear students at Lincoln School. She cared deeply for the children and teachers. Phyllis would often bring home special projects and work on them lovingly late into the night to help out. Phyllis was known for going the "extra mile" to help others. Other favorite activities included entertaining for family and friends, music and volunteering. Phyllis received an award from the first President Bush for the "County Points of Light" for her dedication to community volunteerism.Phyllis had a great love and talent for music. In high school, her girl's vocal sextet went to New York and placed several honors. She also played several instruments including the piccolo, flute, violin, and piano. In later years, nothing gave Phyllis more joy than listening to beautiful music. Two of her favorites were the Many Voices Choir and Glenn Henriksen, pianist/organist. Phyllis looked forward to Halloween in anticipation of greeting past students and their children with homemade goodies. They always stopped to chat awhile with Phyllis. She was also famous for her elaborate, bountiful dinner parties. Phyllis took great joy in hosting a table full of hungry, happy guests; the atmosphere alive with laughter and lively conversation. Phyllis was a most gracious hostess. Teachers enjoyed her spring luncheons. Between Royce and Lynette, she enjoyed many "four legged grandchildren" (cats and dogs), and yes, Phyllis loved them all!
Phyllis was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was involved in circle group, Bible Study, various other committees and sang alto in the choir; WA-TAN-YE, volunteered for area nursing homes, the hospital auxiliary and other community activities.
Left to cherish Phyllis' memory are her daughter, Lynette Eckholt; nephews, Robert Henriksen (Ilona); Ronald Henriksen (Penny); Gerald Beck (Gail); Duane Beck (Kelly) and special family friend, Kris Jones.
Phyllis has been preceded in death by her parents, husband, Roy Lyle; son, Royce Lyle; brother, James Beck and sister, Helen Henriksen.
Phyllis was a very precious soul who will be dearly missed by many. (MC)
