In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Emmet County Relay For Life or the Northwest Iowa Humane SocietyOpal Jeanette (Holland) Knutson, the daughter of Peter and Lena (Hanson) Holland was born April 21, 1920, in Long Lake Township, Minnesota. Opal departed this life on Tuesday, February 7, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville, Iowa, at the age of 91.
She received her education in the District 12 Country School in Long Lake Township.
On February 23, 1941, she was united in mariage to Irvin Knutson in Odin, Minnesota. The couple lived and farmed in the Williams, Iowa, area following their marriage. They then moved to Watonwan County, Minnesota and later to Dolliver, Iowa, in 1950, where they continued to farm until Irvin passed away August 7, 1989. Opal moved to Estherville in the fall of 1989. Opal cooked for Dolliver School and later for Estherville Lincoln Central and the Good Samaritan Society. She also provided care for several elderly people.
She was a member of Estherville Lutheran Church and a past member of Palestine Lutheran. Opal enjoyed gardening, collecting poetry, recipes and spending time with family and friends.
Left to cherish Opal's memory are her daughters, Carolyn Walz and her husband, John of Estherville; Patricia Gerding and her husband, Scott of Rocky Mountain, Missouri; three grandchildren, John Walz; Shane Higgins; Sara Snodderley; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Milo Holland; sister-in-law, Elveda Ross and special nieces, nephews and friends.
She has been preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Leonard.
INTERMENT: East Side Cemetery, Estherville
