Ray S. [Smith] Bryan Lived 40 Years in County
Ray S. Bryan, 78, resident of Emmet county for 40 years, died Oct. 13 at his home in Estherville after a long illness. He had been ill with Parkinson’s disease for several years.

Mr. Bryan was born Feb. 2, 1874 [per WWI draft record 1875], in Franklin county, Iowa, and was educated in the schools of that county. He moved to a farm in Swan Lake township in Emmet county in 1902 and lived in that county until his death. He was married Jan. 10, 1907, to Julia Peterson in Estherville.

The Bryans lived on a farm in Swan Lake township until 1927 when the couple moved to Maple Hill. The Bryans have been living in Estherville since 1947.

Mr. Bryan was a member of the county board of supervisors for 12 years. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran church near Wallingford.

Survivors included his widow, a brother, Sherm, and two sisters, Mrs. A.P. Howell and Mrs. C.L. Sharp, all of Minneapolis, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Oct. 16 at 1:30 p.m. at the Sandin funeral home at 2 pm. at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran church, the Rev. C.B. Gunderson of Wallingford officiating and the Rev. L.G. Hinderaker of Estherville, assisting. Burial was in Swan Lake cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 23, 1952)
