George Berven, 79, longtime Emmet County resident, died at 6:48 a.m. today at Holy Family Hospital, where he had been hospitalized for two weeks. Mr. Berven’s death was attributed to complications following surgery.

George Ole Berven was born Aug. 14, 1887, at Madora, N.D., the son of Ole and Julia Berven. He came with his parents to Emmet County in 1893 and received his education in county schools.

He was married July 1, 1917 to Minnie Schwartz in Estherville. The first year of their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Berven lived in Estherville before moving to a farm. Since that time they had farmed in Emmet County.

While farming in the Maple Hill area, Mr. Berven for many years was president of the Maple Hill Consolidated School. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife; two sons: Albert & Donald of Ringsted; two daughters, Mrs. Orville (Gladys) Gjerde of Ringsted, and Mrs. Vernon (Freida) Johnson of Armstrong; 11 grandchildren; two sisters Mrs. Anna Risk of Trenton, Mich. and Mrs. Arthur (Alma) Hanson of Estherville; 3 brothers, Anton of Estherville, Joe of Anamosa, & Ted of St Paul.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert; his parents; four brothers & one sister.

Funeral services are pending at Fuhrman Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Swan Lake Cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 30, 1966)
