Theodore Wold, pioneer resident of Emmet county, died at 9:00 o’clock Tuesday [January 23, 1940] evening at his home in Estherville after a lingering illness of over a year. Mr. Wold was born in Decorah, Iowa, on May 27, 1868 [1867 per cemetery records]. His family moved to Sioux City when he was a small boy, and made their home there for several years.
In 1878 the family moved to Emmet county and settled on a farm. He was united in marriage to Miss Tena Knudtsen on December 29, 1898, at the High Lake Immanuel Lutheran church. Four daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Wold. They are Mrs. M.P. Erpelding, Mrs. Clifford Huntley, both of Estherville, Mrs. E.C. Bruce of St. Cloud, Minn., and Mildred Wold of Minneapolis. Mrs. Wold and daughters were with Mr. Wold at the time of his death.
In 1918 the Wold family moved to Sanborn where they resided for two years. They moved back to Estherville in 1920 and since that time they have made this their home. Mr. Wold was employed by the Rock Island railroad until May 1939.
Besides his wife and daughters Mr. Wold is survived by one sister, Mrs. L.A. Shiflett of Omaha, Neb., two brothers, Lewis of Cedar Rapids and Otto of Estherville, three granddaughters, Jeanette and Beverly Huntley and Shirley Ann Erpelding all of Estherville.
Mr. Wold was a kind and loving husband and father, a good neighbor and citizen. His sturdy [line missing] principle and his devotion to duty made him an outstanding figure in this community. He was a good man, a kindly man, an honorable man. He will be greatly missed and long remembered by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 1:00 o’clock at the home and at 2:00 o’clock at the Ryan Lake Immanuel Lutheran church. Burial will be in the Swan Lake cemetery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, January 25, 1940)
