Martin Johnson Dies in Estherville April 22, Formerly of Terril
Martin Johnson, 69, of Estherville, died Saturday evening, April 22, of a heart attack. Funeral services for Mr. Martin were conducted Thursday, April 27, at 2 p.m. at the Estherville Christian Church. Burial was in the East Side Cemetery.Mr. Johnson was born May 22, 1891 [per cemetery records, 1890, per WWI draft record, 1889], on a farm 7 miles southeast of Terril. He farmed near Graettinger and Ruthven. He and his family moved to Estherville in 1920.
He is survived by his widow, Ivy, four sons, William of Santa Monica, Calif., Marvin and James of Estherville and Larry, serving with the United States navy in California; two daughters, Mrs. Alfred (Dorothy) Linn and Mrs. Murray (Donna) Lenz, both of Estherville; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Edward of Estherville and Oscar of Mason City, and four sisters, Mrs. O.J. Hanson and Mrs. Jessie Sampson, both of Mason City, Mrs. Elmer Zenor of Terril and Mrs. Martin Christenson of Kenmore, N.D., and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Martin Johnson were conducted Thursday, April 27, at 2 p.m. at the Estherville Christian Church. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Mr. Johnson died Saturday night, April 22.He was born May 22, 1891, on a farm 7 miles southeast of Terril to Andrew Johnson and Anna Thompson Johnson. He was baptized as an infant in the Lutheran faith by the Rev. I.O. Wighdahl of Ruthven and received his religious education when a youth. Later he transferred his membership and joined the Christian church with his wife and family in Estherville. He received his schooling in rural schools and the Lake Center School in Clay County.
In the year April 4, 1917, he was united in marriage to Ivy Platter of Ruthven, Iowa. The following year they moved to a farm in the Graettinger area and farmed various farms in and around Ruthven. In the year 1920 they moved to Estherville where they made their permanent home.
Mr. Johnson was a very kindhearted man and a friend to all who knew him. If persons were in need he was their help. His word was always ---. He will be missed by all who knew him.
