Estherville Vindicator: Mrs. Ann M. Jenkins, who departed this life at the home of her son, Hon. A. Jenkins of Swan Lake, on May 21st, was one of the oldest and most highly respected pioneers in Northwestern Iowa. At the time of her death she had reached the ripe old age of 77 years and 7 months. She was born in Queensbury, Warren county, N.Y., being the oldest of several children, the male members of whom have become prominent in political and business life of the west. She was a full sister of Governor Morgan Bates of Michigan, whose brother and his family were also quite prominent. O.C. Bates, Esq., the founder of the Vindicator, was her half brother. Mrs. Jenkins came to Iowa with her family of seven sons and one daughter some 22 years ago where she has ever since resided. (Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, IA, June 10, 1880)
