Death of an Old Esthervillian
Carrollton, W.T., July 19th, 1889.
Editor, Republican: Mr. G.M. [George Micah] Haskins, formerly of Estherville, Iowa, died at his home in Mt. Pleasant, Cowlitz county, July 17, 1888.Mr. Haskins was among our pioneers having lived in the county for the past thirteen years. He with his family left Iowa during the great grasshopper raid of 1872-6 and was consequently devoid of much means when he came to this coat. But by uniting energy and great perseverance he had succeededin clearing a large farm and making a comfortable home for his family in our wilderness. Mr. Haskins was noted throughout the county for his great hospitality and fine neighborly qualities. A large circle of friends many of whom are formerly from Emmet county express much sympathy for his estimable family in their sad affliction. (Emmet County Republican, Estherville, IA, August 1, 1889)
Our Washington correspondent sends us an account of the death of G.M. Haskins, who will be remembered by all travelers through this country in the olden time. Mr. Haskins resided here twelve years, and for a good share of that time kept the only hotel in town, the Estherville house, located north of the round house where M.B. Crumb now resides. One of the first places visited by Mayor Studor, in town, was the site of this old hotel, where he had been entertained nearly a quarter of a century before. The old land mark has long since been removed. (Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, July 26, 1889)
