Mrs. H.L. (Alice Louise) Howard, 76, a resident of both the Gruver and Estherville communities, died yesterday at 2:40pm at Holy Family Hospital. Mrs. Howard had been in failing health for the past 10 years. In the last two years her condition had grown more serious.

The daughter, of William and Anna (Hoogestraat) Folken was born Dec 25, 1885 at Carroll. She received her education the Carroll and Lennox, SD. schools.

She was married to Herbert Howard on Feb. 9, 1910 at Lennox, SD. Previous to her marriage, Mrs. Howard taught school in the rural area near Lennox, SD.

Following her marriage, she and her husband farmed in South Dakota until 1928 when they moved to a farm near Gruver. They farmed in the Gruver area until retirement in 1948 moving to Estherville.

Mrs. Howard is survived by four sons, Harold, William, Donald and Emerson all of Estherville; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Three sisters, Mrs. H.E. Wilkinson of Donna, TX, Mrs. Katherine Burma and Miss Etta Folken, both of Lennox also survive.

Her parents, husband, two daughters, one son, two sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.

Services will be held Saturday at 2:00pm at the 1st Presbyterian Church. The Rev. James K. Lyon will officiate with burial to be in the East Side Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Sternborg-Reese Funeral Home beginning Friday morning until 11 a.m. Saturcya at which time the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until time of services. The casket will not be opened following services. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 5, 1962)
