Alfred Hoppe, Sr.
Estherville – Services for Alfred “Pops” Hoppe,Sr., 87, of Estherville, will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. the Good Samaritan Chapel in Estherville with Pastor Virgil Anderson officiating. Burial will be at East Side Cemetery in Estherville. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the Good Samaritan Chapel. He died December 1 at the Good Samaritan Center in Estherville.He was born January 8, 1906 in Duentehal, Germany, the son of William and Amelia (Backe) Hoppe. He came to the United States with his parents at a young age. He received his education in the rural Melon, Wis. schools.
He married Ada March in 1932 while he was employed at Cudya Packing in Newport, Minn. In 1952, he moved to Estherville where he was first employed at Tobin Packing Company and later by John Morrell and Company. He was a casing foreman and a night watchman until his retirement in 1971. He became a resident at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in February of 1988.
He was survived by his sister, Elsie Wise of St. Paul, Minn.; two sons: Alfred Hoppe, Jr. of Alpha, Minn. and Virgil Hoppe, North Pole, Alaska; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother (Oscar) and one granddaughter (Janean). (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 4, 1993)
