Estherville – Services for Gustav Holmgren, 84, of Estherville, are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Calvary Gospel Assembly. Rev. Ernest Gafkjen and Rev. David Ogren will officiate. He died Monday, Sept. 28 at his home.Burial will be at East Side Cemetery.
Mr. Holmgren was born on April 30, 1903, in Naper, Nebr., to Phillipp Holmgren and Katharina Wetzler Holmgren. He attended school in Naper.
He farmed in Boyd County, Nebr. until the fall of 1934 when he moved to Iowa and worked for various farmers in Emmet County. In 1937 he went to work for Tobin Packing Company and later worked for John Morrell Company. On June, 1939, he married Clare Faatz in Spirit Lake.
Holmgren was employed at John Morrell until his retirement in 1968. Following that he did custodial work for Recher, Inc., until ill health forced his retirement.
He had been a member of Calvary Gospel Assembly. He enjoyed gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Clara, one son, Kenneth and his wife Sharon of St. Paul, Minn.; two daughters Kathryn and Karen Holmgren both of Estherville; three grandchildren, Paul, Rachel and Samuel Holmgren of St. Paul, Min.; five brothers: Henry of Naper, Nebr., John of Alexandria, Minn., Phillip of Kearny, Nebr., Rudolf and Albert, both of Estherville, and one sister, Mrs. Clara Stahlecker of Evansville, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers William and Chris; and one sister, Frieda VanDenBerg. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 30, 1987)
