Estherville – Services for Lulu Ruth Holcomb, 86, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Balm officiating. Interment will be in East Side Cemetery. She died Wednesday evening, August 17, 1983 at the Good Samaritan Center.

Friends may call at the Fuhrman Funeral Home after 3 p.m. today (Friday).

Miss Holcomb was born Sept. 14, 1896 at Graettinger [Per mother’s obituary, the family was living in Nebraska in 1896], the daughter of Hokey and Phernilla (Nelson) Holcomb. She attended Graettinger and Estherville Schools and after graduating from Estherville High School she attended Mankato Normal School. She taught school at rural Emmet County before starting to work for the United States Postal Service in Estherville in 1920. She served as a finance clerk for 30 years and parcel post clerk for 7 years. She retired in 1958. Her favorite recreation was traveling. In 1923 she toured the Great Lakes by boat; in 1935 sailed to Europe; in 1941 sailed in a banana boat to Cuba and Central America; in 1957 she and her dearest friend, Gretchen Smith, also of Estherville, toured Europe; they traveled around the world in 1968. Holcomb’s last major trip was to Scandinavia in 1972.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church; United Methodist Women and Quilting Club; a charter member of the Alpha Class; was active in the Emmet County Historical Society; active in the Woman’s Club; Emmet County Tuberculosis and Health Association; active in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Estherville Senior Citizens.

Survivors include two sisters: Hulda Emery, Arnolds Park and Mrs. Mabel Brooks, Redlands, Calif.; several nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers and three sisters. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 19, 1983)
