Services for Jay P. Hoien, 76, of Estherville will be Sunday, April 7 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church with the Reverend David Wendel officiating. Interment will be at the East Side Cemetery in Estherville. He died Thursday, April 4 at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.Friends may call at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville from 4-9 Saturday, April 6.
He was born February 14, 1915 at Halfa, Iowa, the son of Jim and Edna (Fuller) Hoien. He graduated from Maple Hill H.S. and married Evelyn Smith on January 9, 1938 in Estherville. He lived all his life in Emmet County. After farming for two years he was employed by the Iowa Department of Transportation of Emmet County for 37 years, seven of which he was a foreman. He belonged to the United Methodist Church, American Legion and the A.A.R.P. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII.
He is survived by his wife, two sons: Larry Hoien and his wife, Marie of Jackson, Wi. and David Hoien and his wife Margaret of Ames, four grandchildren: Paul Jay, Connie Marie, Laura Beth, and Sondra Lynn, and one brother, Bruce F. Hoien of Estherville.
He was preceded in death by his parents and twin infant daughters, Donna and Diane. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 6, 1991)
