Estherville – Funeral services for Freda M. [Martha] Heiman, 90, of Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Estherville with Pastor Glenn Bohmer officiating. Interment will be at East Side Cemetery, Estherville. She died on Sept. 3, 1999, at Avera Holy Family Hospital, Estherville.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Henry-Olson-Furhman Funeral Home in Estherville.

She was born on July 14, 1909 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Emil and Frieda (Griffke) Zehnder. She began her education in the Battle Creek country schools. The family moved to Terril in 1919. She completed her education in Terril and graduated from Terril High School in 1927. As a young person, she worked part time in Farmers Cash Store in Terril and helped on the family farm.

On Sept. 18, 1929, she was united in marriage to Frederick William Heiman at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Terril. She has lived her entire married life in Estherville. In 1953, she was employed by Montgomery Wards and in 1963 for Mouritsen’s Red Owl until her retirement in 1972. Mr. Heiman died Jan. 31, 1982.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Ladies Guild, Lois Circle, Senior Fellowship, taught Sunday school and sang in the church choir for many years. She took the tape ministry to the nursing homes and shut-ins for over 25 years.

She was active in the Lutheran World Relief quilt project for 29 years. She made over 100 quilt tops at home each year and helped put them together at church. She was a member of the Wa-tan-ye Club and was a past president and member of the Estherville Senior Citizens.

She is survived by her son, Eugene F. Heiman and wife Gertrude Morrison of Northridge, Calif.; daughters: Arleen A. Hultman and husband, Roger, of Cherokee; Carolyn R. Beck and husband, Donald, of Des Moines; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; and brother Carl Zehnder and wife June of Branson, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, granddaughter, Nancy Hultman, parents, two sisters, Marie Goreham and Louise Milton, four brothers, Emil, Rudolph, Walter and Sam Zehnder. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 4, 1999)
