George Osborne Pioneer Dies
Came to Estherville More Than 75 Years Ago – Funeral Rites Monday
George Robert Osborne, 83, resident of this community for three-quarters of a century, died Saturday [September 5, 1936] at the county home farm after an illness of only a few hours. He has lived at the county farm for the past year.

Last rites were held on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Mahlum and Anderson chapel with burial in the East Side cemetery. The Rev. J.A. Riggs of the Baptist church read the service.

Mr. Osborne was born February 22, 1853, in Austin, Minn. He is a retired well digger, a profession he worked at for forty-five years. He retired in 1929. During the time the meteor fell in this vicinity Mr. Osborne was one of a group of men who helped dig up the pieces, using his well digging equipment. He and several of the men also exhibited pieces of the meteor at neighboring fairs and other big gatherings.

He is survived by two children, John Osborne, of California, and Mrs. Delia Cornell, of Detroit, Mich. One granddaughter, Mrs. Orlo le Van, of Cedar Rapids, was present at the funeral. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, September 10, 1936)
