Accident Claims Local Man
Fairmont – A one-car accident on Minnesota Highway 41, 10 miles south of Fairmont near the Iowa state line, claimed the life of a local man on Thursday evening.

John Halverson, 38, of Estherville was pronounced dead at the scene following the 8 p.m. crash, according to a spokesperson at the Martin County Sheriff’s Department.

It was reported that Halverson’s 1986 Ford Van was southbound on Highway 41 when it left the roadway, struck the berm and crossed back in to the north lane. Halverson was the only occupant of the vehicle and no other vehicles were involved.

Units from the Fairmont Fire and Rescue Squad and Martin County Sheriff’s Department responded to the accident. The cause of the crash is under investigation. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 6, 1993)

Estherville – Services for John P. Halverson, 38, of Estherville, will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Wendel officiating. Interment will be in East Side Cemetery. He died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1993 near Fairmont, Minn.

Friends may call at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville from 2-8 p.m. Sunday.

He was born July 26, 1955 in Estherville, the son of Palmer and Nada (Swartz) Halverson. He received his education in the Estherville schools, graduating from high school in 1973. He attended Iowa Lake Community College and graduated with a marketing degree from Mankato State University in Mankato. Following his education, he has been employed as a professional musician, playing drums for various bands and in several states. On February 21, 1987 he was united in marriage with Barb Juarez at Sioux City. John was an entrepreneur, starting a band instrument repair service in 1987 called Bum Notes.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Estherville and was active in Senior High Methodist Youth and sang in the church choir.

Survivors include his wife Barb of Estherville; a daughter Marjorie Marie and son Donald Andrew, Estherville; his parents, Palmer and Nada Halverson of Estherville; one sister, Jeanine Halverson of Vermillion, S.D.; several aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Donald, and his grandparents. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 6, 1993)
