Estherville – Services for Harry C. Berchenbriter, Jr., 71, of Estherville, will be held Wednesday at 10;30 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Estherville with the Rev. David Wendel officiating. Interment will be in East Side Cemetery in Estherville. He died Saturday, December 19, 1992, at Spencer Municipal Hospital, Spencer.Friends may call at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville after 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
He was born Oct. 9, 1921 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Harry C. and Lewella (Davis) Berchenbriter, Sr. and received his education in the Cedar Rapids schools, graduating from Wilson High School in Cedar Rapids in 1940. He was united in marriage to Eloise Sumner on Sept. 20, 1944 in Greenville, S.C.
Berchenbriter served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater as a combat engineer. Following the war, he returned to Cedar Rapids and farmed for one year. He was then employed by Collins Radio for several years. In 1951, the family moved to Estherville where he started B&B Implement in partnership with his father. He operated the implement dealership until 1985.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Estherville, American Legion, V.F.W. and was a member of the Estherville Fire Department for 25 years, retiring as the assistant fire chief.
Survivors include four sons, Edward Berchenbriter of West Des Moines, Floyd Berchenbriter of Fort Worth, Texas, David Berchenbriter of New York, N.Y., Kenneth Berchenbriter of Oklahoma City, Okla.; daughter, Grace Berchenbriter of Storm Lake; sister, Carol Swartz of Dolliver; two brothers, Gerald Berchenbriter of Spirit Lake, Kenneth Berchenbriter of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise, who died Sept. 16, 1989, and his parents. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 21, 1992)
