The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bergham, [Berghaus] who live on the W.H. Miner farm, passed away last Thursday [February 8, 1917] night. Little Melvin Lyle was only six and a half weeks of age. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. J.F. Catlin, at 1:30 Sunday afternoon. Interment was in the East Side Cemetery. The heartfelt sympathy of the friends and neighbors is extended to the sorrowing parents. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, February 14, 1917)
Mr. and Mrs. and Mrs. H.E. Berghaus Lose Their Baby
Little Melvin Lyle Berghaus was born on Christmas Day 1916 and died Feb. 9th. He was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Berghaus, who live on a farm three miles northeast of Gruver. The funeral service was held at the home at 1:30 Sunday afternoon, being conducted by Rev. J. Frederic Catlin of the Union Baptist Church of Estherville. The little body was laid to rest in the East Side Cemetery of Estherville. Mr. and Mrs. Berghaus came to Emmet County in Sept. and feel somewhat like strangers, yet they have the sympathy of their entire neighborhood in the sudden loss of their tiny babe.
