Estherville – Services for Mrs. Harry Berchenbriter, 69, will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Estherville with the Rev. Tom Balm officiating. Burial will follow in Eastside Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 4:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville. Mrs. Berchenbriter died Saturday, September 16, 1989 at her home in Estherville.Eloise Almond Berchenbriter was born October 27, 1919 in Sylva, North Carolina to Floyd and Grace Eloise (Cogdill) Sumner. She attended Sylva, N.C. schools and the Biltmore School of Nursing in Ashville, N.C. On September 20, 1944 she married Harry C. Berchenbriter, Jr. in Greenville, S.C. After their marriage, Eloise worked as a nurse at Biltmore Hospital in Ashville, N.C. The couple moved to Cedar Rapids in 1946 where Eloise did nursing at St. Luke’s Hospital. In 1951 the couple moved to Estherville and Eloise worked at Holy Family Hospital as a nurse for a number of years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Harry Berchenbriter, Jr. of Estherville; one daughter: Grace Berchenbriter of Storm Lake; and four sons: Edward of West Des Moines, Floyd of Mesa, Ariz., and David of Minneapolis; two brothers: Ben Sumner of Sylva, N.C. and Ed Sumner of Ashville, N.C.; a sister: Mrs. Mildred Phillips of Sylva, N.C. and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, three sisters and one half-sister. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 18, 1989)
