Baby Dead After Birth in Blizzard
Family services for Rhonda Kaye Barber, stillborn daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Barber of Estherville, will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Home, Rev. W.H. Discher officiating.Burial will be in East Side Cemetery. The casket will not be opened at any time.
The baby was born Thursday [March 24, 1966] at 7:15 a.m. while Mr. and Mrs. Barber were snowbound at the home of Mrs. Barber’s mother, Mrs. Mary Denton, in Fenton.
Mrs. Barber went into labor Wednesday night. All roads were blocked and the telephone lines out.
Attempts to contact a physician were futile. The Fenton practitioner was out of town.
A snowplow could not be located to take Mrs. Barber to the hospital at Algona. Finally, a Fenton registered nurse, Mrs. Clarence Yeager, was reached and came to the Denton home to assist with the delivery.
Shortly thereafter, a snowplow reached the house and brought Mrs. Barber to St. Ann’s Hospital at Algona.
The baby is survived by her parents; one sister, Diane, and one brother, Russell, Jr., both at home; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Denton and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Barber of Whittemore. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 25, 1966)
