Mary L. Erickson
Estherville – Funeral services for Mary L. Erickson, 82, of Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lynn Potter officiating. Interment will be at East Side Cemetery , Estherville. She died Sunday, May 12 at her daughter’s home in Huntington.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

Mary Lillian Sachen, daughter of Henry and Verna (Creitz) Sachen, was born in Sioux Falls, S.D., on April 9, 1920.

She attended school in Sioux Falls and completed the eighth grade. In 1987, at the age of 67, she was awarded a G.E.D. by Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville.

Mary was united in marriage with Walter (Wally) Erickson on October 15, 1938, in Canton, S.D. The couple lived in Sioux Falls until 1944 at which time the National Guard was activated and they were sent to Mineral Wells, Texas, for a year. They returned to Sioux Falls and moved to Estherville in 1956. Mary devoted her time to her children until they all became of school age. In 1959, she went to work for Butterfield Produce (currently known as Estherville Foods) where she continued to work until 1997. Upon moving to Estherville, the couple took up golf and played in many couples tournaments. Mary was an avid golfer and was club champion at both Estherville Golf & County Club and Riverview Golf Course.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the VFW Auxiliary. Mary also enjoyed crocheting afghans and traveling to see her children and their families. Her true passion was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was always there to share in the joys of life and help through the hard times.

Cherishing her memory are her children: Jan Lange and her husband, Steve, of Estherville; Judith (Judy) Good and her husband, Steve, of Des Moines; Jovita Thompson and her husband, Denny, of Minot, N.D.; Jerry Erickson and his wife, Judy, of Estherville; Bob Erickson and his wife, Sonia, of Spirit Lake; nine grandchildren, Steve T. Lange, of Los Angeles, Calif.; Stacy Daub and her husband, Doug, of Morgan, Minn.; Todd Good, of Des Moines; Terri Huber and her husband, Rick, of Minot, N.D.; Eric Erickson and his wife, Melissa, of Estherville; Lisa Erickson, of Estherville; Carrie Erickson, of Estherville; Nik Erickson of Spirit Lake; Micayla Erickson of Spirit Lake; seven great-grandchildren, Jacobi and Jeremy Lane, of Kansas City, Mo.; Collin Daub, of Morgan; Jordan and Taylor Huber, of Minot; Chase and Brenden Duer, of Estherville; two brothers, Henry Sachen and his wife, Marcy, of Sioux Falls; George Sachen and his wife, Pat, of Sioux Falls; three sisters, Betty Coulter, of Sioux Falls; Verna Miller, of Sioux Falls; Lillian Berreth and her husband, Edward, of Humboldt, S.D.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a multitude of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wally, on September 29, 1981; her parents; two brothers, Harry and Chuck; two sisters, Sally Erickson and Ann Stratmeyer. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 13, 2002)
