T. W. Emery Passes Away Here
Had Only Resided in This City About a Year, Remains Were Taken to Ruthven for Burial
On Monday morning, Feb. 21, T.W. Emery, living on North 10th St., was stricken with paralysis, his whole right side being effected. For a few days the family had some hope of his recovery, but he had not been in good health for some months and after Thursday it was apparent that he was gradually growing weaker. He passed away about midnight, Monday Feb. 28. Mr. Emery moved with his family from West Bend to Estherville a little more than a year ago, purchasing the property formerly owned by E.E. Hamrick. On account of his poor heath he was not able to get about very much and hence was not so well known as he would otherwise have been in our city. Those who became acquainted with him recognized him as a man of high principles and sterling worth. The members of the family were constantly at his bedside doing all that it was possible to do to relieve his suffering. The sympathy of the community goes out to the family in their sorrow. The funeral services took place at the home Wednesday, March 2, with Rev. G. Voorhies in charge. Burial was in Ruthven. Mrs. Barrington of Ruthven, and Mrs. Martin of Huntington, Ind., were present for the funeral services.

The following obituary was read at the funeral:

Thomas Washington Emery was born in Jackson County, Iowa, Feb. 22, 1854. Here he grew to manhood and from here moved to Colfax, Ia., where on Oct. 19, 1881 he was united in marriage with Miss Hattie N. Kiser. To this union three children were born, all of whom, together with Mrs. Emery survive him. The children are Mrs. Ray Barringer of Ruthven, Iowa, Mrs. File Martin of Huntington, Ind., and Mrs. Clifford Nurss of Estherville, Iowa.

After three years at Colfax the family moved to Marshall county where they resided on a farm until 1893 when they moved to Palo Alto county, near West Bend. In 1896 they moved into West Bend, where MR. Emery engaged in the butcher business for a few years, when he again took up farming. This time on a farm in Kossuth County near West Bend. After about twenty years on this farm the family came to Estherville to make their home. Here about midnight, Feb. 28, Mr. Emery was called hence to the eternal home. Mr. Emery was a good Christian man, having been a consistent member of the Presbyterian church for more than 25 years. He was of a quiet disposition, kindly in his attitude to every one, and a faithful loving father and husband. A large circle of friends will feel a real loss in his going. Our sympathy goes out to each member of the family and we would make their grief les poignant by turning their thought to this fact – death is but the gateway into life. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, March 2, 1921)
