Wm. Leonard Arthur, the son of William and Elsie (Raeder) Arthur, was born June 19, 1918, in Spirit Lake, Iowa. He died Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Center in Estherville, Iowa, at the age of 88 years.He received his education in the Spirit Lake schools, graduating in 1935. After completing his education he served in the United States Army, 3rd Armored Infantry Division under General George S. Patton Jr. in the European Theatre during World War II.
On August 30, 1946, he was united in marriage to Hilda Merry in Sioux City, Iowa. Following their marriage the couple made their home and farmed in the Spirit Lake and Rice Lake, Wisconsin, areas. He also manufactured wooden golf club heads while living in Rice Lake. Later they moved to Santa Ana, California. Then they returned to the Estherville area. He was an avid gardener and loved wildlife and walking. Hilda died April 27, 2001.
Left to cherish his memory are one son, Thomas M. Arthur of Santa Ana, California; three daughters, Jane Wahl and her husband, Harley of Slayton, Minnesota; Connie Paradise and her husband, De Wayne of Wausau, Wisconsin; Mary Jo Arthur of Herndon, Virginia; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a sister, Vivian Frost of Spirit Lake; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his wife; one son, William John Arthur who died December 13, 1993; his parents; and two sisters.
