Former Estherville Man Fatally Injured in Crash
Cylinder – The father of an Estherville woman was fatally injured in a two-car crash on U.S. Highway 18 in Cylinder Wednesday [January 18, 1978] afternoon. Two persons were also hospitalized in the crash.

Fatally injured with Melvin L. Anderson, 65, Whittemore and formerly of Estherville. He is the father of Mrs. Gary Fick, Estherville.

Injured in the crash were Mr. Anderson’s wife, Petty Faye Anderson, and Gary Hubert, Fort Dodge. Mrs. Anderson was taken to Palo Alto County Hospital, where she is reportedly recovering from multiple injuries to the ribs, legs and face. Hubert is hospitalized in Fort Dodge with chest injuries and abrasions.

An Iowa Highway Patrol trooper said the accident occurred about 1 p.m. and that both cars were a total loss.

Services for Mr. Anderson are pending at the Henry and Olson Funeral Home, Estherville. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 19, 1978)

Estherville – Services for Melvin LeRoy Anderson, 72, Whittemore and formerly of Estherville, will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Henry and Olson Funeral Home, Estherville, with the Rev. Harvey Throop, Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be in East Side Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. today until time of services.

Mr. Anderson was fatally injured Wednesday in a two-car crash on U.S. Highway 18 at Cylinder.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Burt Anderson, he was born Dec. 11, 1905, in Hamilton County. He received his education in Ringsted schools and was married to Severine Jensen in 1937 at Ringsted. Following her death he was married to Faye Barbas Dec. 28, 1955, at Mankato, Minn.

Mr. Anderson farmed in Emmet County most of his life but was employed with Associated Milk Producers of Iowa at Whittemore for the past seven years.

He is survived by his wife, Faye, Whittemore; one son, Steven Anderson, in the U.S. Navy, Ewa Beach, Maui, Hawaii; four daughters, Mrs. Richard (Lorrie) Garrison, Arnolds Park, Mrs. Gary (Peggy) Fick, Estherville; Mrs. Richard (Kathy) Anderson, St. Paul, Minn., and Mrs. Edward (Delores) Vaughan, White Bear Lake, Minn.; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Harry Anderson, VanNuys, Calif., and Bertle Anderson, Spirit Lake; and two sisters, Mrs. Howard (Lillian) Hanson, Graettinger; and Mrs. Mildren Booth, Fairmont, Minn.

Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by his first wife, parents and one brother. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 20, 1978)
