David Weir Killed By Falling Sacks at Golden Sun Co.
The first serious accident of the Golden Sun Milling company was the accidental death of David Weir last Monday [June 24, 1940] afternoon at 2:15.

Weir was in one of the stock rooms where they had been piling large sacks of bone meal. He evidently had his back to a pile of the meal sacks when the pile toppled over on him burying him under about a ton of sacks. Ora Brown was in the warehouse with Mr. Weir and summoned help immediately. Twelve men in and about the plant worked feverishly to get him uncovered and save his life. He was doubled over under the sacks in such a manner he had become suffocated by the weight and sacks. There were no bones broken according to the medical attendants.

Only a few days before the milling company had been inspected for dangerous appliances, etc., and given an O.K. This, however, was an accident pure and simple and was so designated by Coroner Fred Sternborg.

Mr. Weir is one of the pioneering families of this county. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Weir, pioneers. He is survived by his wife and a two years old son, a brother, John Weir, and a half brother, Byron Weir, two sisters, Mrs. Jesse Rosberg and Mrs. Arthur Donahue and a half sister, Mrs. George Luikart.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at the Presbyterian church with the Rev. Claude Fausnaugh in charge. Burial was made in Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, June 27, 1940)
