Isabella Middleton Welsh Skow 1883-1976

Estherville – Funeral services for Mrs. Isabella Skow, 92, Estherville, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Fuhrman Funeral Home with the Rev. Harvey Throop of the Presbyterian Church officiating and burial at the Oak Hill Cemetery. She died Monday [February 23, 1976] morning at the Good Samaritan Center.

Mrs. Skow was born July 13, 1883 to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Welsh in Jack Creek Township. After completing two years of high school, she went to Brechin, Scotland to learn dressmaking from two aunts and tailoring from an uncle. After returning to the United States, she taught in rural schools for two years, graduated from Coe College in Business and was employed in Cedar Rapids.

She married Sam Skow on Feb. 28, 1912 at her parent’s farm home and they farmed near Emmetsburg until 1915 when they moved to Lamberton, Minn. and purchased a garage. They operated the garage until Mr. Skow’s death in 1958. She returned to Emmet County and lived with family members until 1961 when she moved to Estherville. Mrs. Skow was a member of the Lamberton Methodist Church, Estherville Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service, taught adult Sunday school for a number of years, was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a Past Matron.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Jane Ellerston and Annie F. Welsh, Estherville; one nephew, James C. Ellerston, Ringsted; a grandniece and two grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters and two brothers.
