Estherville – Funeral services for Clyde Edwin Sanborn, 87, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Estherville with the Rev. John Bowe and the Rev. Fred Sawyer officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. He died Sunday, Dec. 23, 1984 at his home in Estherville.

The Fuhrman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Masonic services were held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

He was born May 10, 1897 at Armstrong, Iowa, the son of Edwin and Clara (Pockman) Sanborn. He attended the Estherville schools and graduated from the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, N.M. and the Chicago Business College in Chicago, Ill. He served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army during World War I. On July 27, 1927 he was united in marriage to Grace Gilbertson in Estherville. The couple operated a variety store in Varina and Swea City before opening the East Lawn Market in Estherville in 1933 and later moving to a downtown location. During World War II he was recalled to service and served at the Rock Island Arsenal as civilian chief. In 1945 the couple returned to Estherville where they owned and operated the Sanborn Furniture Store until retiring in 1968.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Abu Bekr Shrine, the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite Consistory, the Rotary Club, the American Legion and the Estherville Chamber of Commerce. Military rites will be conducted by the Estherville American Legion. He and his wife established an educational trust making scholarships available each year for Estherville area students at Iowa Lakes College in Estherville. He is survived by his wife, Grace.
