Estherville – Services for Melvin J. [Jay] Hockett, 90, will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church on North 6th St. Pastor Glenn Bohmer will officiate. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Estherville. He died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 1995 at Good Samaritan Center in Estherville.Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.
He was born May 30, 1905 at Armstrong, the son of Otha and Blanche (Houseman) Hockett and attended country schools near Armstrong. On Sept. 1, 1929 he married Elise Andressen at Estherville. He lived most of his life in Estherville where he farmed and was employed by the city of Estherville from Feb. 1936 until retiring in May of 1970. He has been a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Estherville.
Survivors include a son Harold (Hal) Hockett, Bloomington, Minn.; four grandchildren: Daniel Klein, Sioux Falls, S.D., Steven Klein, Bossier City, La.; Mrs. Jerome (Barbara) Schacherer, Estherville and Mrs. Lee (Linda) Olson of Rochester, Minn.; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Arnold Hockett of Estherville; nieces nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife in May, 1992; daughter; two sisters and one brother. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 13, 1995)
