Robert Hamilton (73), of Lakota, who died early Sunday [April 3, 1932] morning at his home in Lakota was buried in Oak Hill cemetery Tuesday. The funeral services were held in Lakota. He is survived by his wife and one son, Robert Jr., age fifteen. He had many friends in this city, being a member of the Masonic lodge here. It was his request that he be buried in the cemetery at Estherville. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, April 6, 1932)

Lakota, Apr. 12 – Robert Hamilton, who died last week, was born at St. Johnson, Ireland, September 16, 1859. He came to the U.S. when he was 19, stayed with a sister in Washington, D.C., for a year, coming west in 1879. Soon after his arrival he began working for George Wells, who then owned thousands of acres of land and many cattle in northern Iowa. He worked for Mr. Wells for 32 years, and has since made his home in Lakota. He was married to Maude Youngman, of Estherville, December 5, 1915, and besides her is survived by one son Robert Jr., 15. Mr. Hamilton was a member of the local Presbyterian church and was a Mason for more than 50 years, having taken the 32nd degree. He is also survived by a sister and a brother in Philadelphia. Mr. Hamilton visited this brother and sister last fall. Another sister, living in Washington, died the same week. Mr. Hamilton was taken seek. Mr. Hamilton was buried at Estherville with Masonic honors. (Kossuth County Advance, Algona, IA, April 14, 1932)

Robert Hamilton was born Sept. 16, 1859 at St. Johnston, six miles from Londenberry [Londenderry], Ireland. He came to the United States in 1878 at the age of 19 years. He made his home the first year with his sister in Washington, D.C. coming west in 1879. Soon after his arrival he began working for George Wells who owned thousands of acres of land and many cattle in northern Iowa. Later he became overseer and continued in the employ of Mr. Wells for about 32 years. After that Mr. Hamilton made his home in Germania, now Lakota, procuring and improving the property which is still the home of his family.

In 1889 he returned to Ireland to visit his mother who was falling in health and passed away soon after his return to America. His father died when Robert was very young.

He was united in marriage with Maude Youngman of Estherville at her home, Dec. 5, 1915. They have made their home here ever since. Their son, Robert Jr., was born Sept. 15, 1917.

They united with the Presbyterian church of Germania by letter in 1916 Mr. Hamilton’s letter being sent here from his old home church in Ireland.

Mr. Hamilton joined the Masonic lodge about 50 years ago at Steamboat Rock, first the Blue lodge, then the Royal Arts, Commandary, Consistory and Shrine, remaining in good standing until his death.

He leaves to mourn his passing his widow, his only son, Robert, and one brother and sister in Philadelphia. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. He was a good husband and father, always looking after the interests of his family and a good citizen, ready to do all he could for his town and willing to help those in need.
