Thos. Hamilton Died Wednesday Afternoon From Infection
Thomas J. [John] Hamilton died last Wednesday evening at Coleman hospital after a brief illness. A few days ago he injured one of his fingers. From this infection set in and he became suddenly crictically ill. Everything possible was done to overcome the infection but it seemed to have spread over his entire system. He became unconscious the first of the week and remained in that condition until death.

Mr. Hamilton came to this city some seven years ago. He was a man of fine personality and made many friends while here. At one time he operated a small grocery store south of the Sorenson studio and later became a salesman for a cash register company.

Mr. Hamilton was born in Forest City September 14, 1894, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hamilton. Later he resided in Buffalo Center and came from Cylinder to this city. He was a World war veteran and served overseas for over a year and a half. He was a member of the American Legion.

Funeral services are to be held at the home on Sunday at 2:30, the Rev. Fred Sawyer and F.W. Ortmeyer officiating. The services at the Oak Hill cemetery will be in charge of the Masonic Order. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, April 6, 1939)

Hamilton Loses Fight For Life
Beloved Local Citizen Passed Last Night From Blood Poisoning – Ill Nearly Two Weeks
Thomas J. Hamilton, 44, well known and highly esteemed Estherville man, died at 7:42 p.m. yesterday at the Coleman hospital after a short illness of blood poisoning. His condition was serious but not considered critical until Sunday when he was taken to the hospital from his home. He made a gallant fight and on Tuesday seemed to have made a slight turn for the better. He had been unconscious since Sunday.

Much of Mr. Hamilton’s life had been spent in Estherville. He was born Sept. 14, 1894 at Forest City and came to this place when a small boy. He attended school here until he entered the service of the C.R.I. and P. as a brakeman.

On Feb. 17, 1914 he was married in Estherville to Miss Gertrude Mabel Wilson of Buffalo Center. They moved to that town and Mr. Hamilton was in the retail mercantile business with his father in law for 15 years. The family returned to Estherville in 1933. For several years he conducted a grocery store east of the square and for the past few years has been on the road as salesman.

Surviving his untimely death are his wife and four children, Mrs. Orris Sunde, Thomas, jr., William and Dawn; his mother, Mrs. Ed Mawdsley, Minneapolis, two brothers, William Hamilton, Buffalo Center; James, Minneapolis, and three sisters, Mrs. Mayme Walsh, Ames; Mrs. Ethel Otto, Menominee, Wisc., and Mrs. Katherine Glass, Minneapolis, Minn.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at two-thirty from the home in charge of Rev. F.W. Ortmeyer of the M.E. church. Interment will be made in Oak Hill cemetery.

Mr. Hamilton was a member of the Maurice Doyle Post American Legion and North Star Chapter No. 447 A.F. and A.M. and members of these organizations will serve as pall bearers. Included are Willard Crim, I.C. Nichols, C.J. Schryver, Robert Kelma, Wm. Johnston and R.K. Blazer. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, April 6, 1939)
