Armory Will Be Dedicated
The Estherville National Guard Armory will be dedicated in memory of M-Sgt. Joyce E. Fredericksen at 2:30 Sunday afternoon. Full military honors are to be given Sergeant Fredericksen, who was killed in Korean action on June 29, 1953.

Included in the dedication program at the monument in his honor, are the presentation of a memorial plaque to Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Fredericksen, parents of Joyce Fredericksen, by the Commanding officer of the 194th FA Bn., Lt. Col. Elmer P. Lindhart, and brief addresses by Brig. Gen. Gerald E. DuBois, Commanding General, 34th Inf. Div.; Maj. Gen. Fred C. Tandy, Adjutant General of Iowa; Gov. Leo A. Hoegh, Mayor G.K. Allen and William Henaman, president Estherville Chamber of Commerce.

Joyce Edward Fredericksen was born Dec.1, 1931 in Ringsted, received his education in Estherville, graduating from high school and attending Junior College for one year. He enlisted in Battery C, 194th FA Bn., Iowa NG on Dec. 1, 1947, was called to active duty with the unit on Sept. 11, 1950 as a Corporal, then attended Leadership School at Ft. Sill, Okla., and graduated from there Feb. 10, 1951.

Corporal Fredericksen attended an Artillery Survey school at Ft. Sill graduating in May and was promoted to Sergeant in June, 1951. He re-enlisted for three years, in August , 1951, in the regular Army so that he could be sent overseas with the 194th FA Bn. While in Germany with the 194th in December, 1951, he was promoted to Sergeant first class as chief of a firing battery, and became First Sergeant of Battery C in April, 1952.

Sgt. Fredericksen transferred to the First Infantry Division to qualify as Infantryman to volunteer for Korean combat. He spent a short leave with his parents in Estherville prior to embarkation for [garbled] for the Far East. He arrived in Japan in April, Korea in May, 1953. Assigned platoon sergeant in Co. A. 179th Inf. Regt., 45th Division, he was killed in action June 29, 1953.

He was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Gold Star lapel button, United States Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Bronze Service Star, German Occupation Ribbon and Good Conduct Ribbon.

His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Fredericksen live at W. 301 North Second street. Mr. Fredericksen is manager of the Superior Grain Elevator. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 27,1955)
