Estherville – Services for Francis Richard (Dick) Everds, 77, Estherville, will be held Friday, 1:30 p.m., at the Henry and Olson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Fred Sawyer officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. He died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 1983 at Holy Family Hospital.Friends may call at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday.
Everds was born Mar. 31, 1906 at Meriden, the son of Rev. J.W. and Martha (VanderLass) Everds. He was a graduate of Independence High School and attended Iowa State University. On March 28, 1935 he was united in marriage with Virginia Johnston at Estherville.
Everds worked for the Iowa Highway Commission after high school, then attended Iowa State University. After his marriage the couple lived in Estherville and he became the Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce for a short time. He later became a salesman for J.D. Adams Co. then the Caterpiller Tractor Co. Everds became a superintendent for the Green Construction Co. during the building of the Alcan Highway in Alaska where he worked for eight months. In 1943 he started the Everds Brothers Construction Co., Inc. and continued in this work actively as chairman of the board at the time of his death. He was a delegate to the 1952 National Republican convention; member of Estherville Airport Committee; board member of the National Asphalt Pavement Association; legislative chairman of the Associated General Contractors of Iowa; past president of the Asphalt Pavement Association of Iowa; member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity; headed the Governor’s Committee for Refugee Relief under President Eisenhower; boar member of Iowa Right to Work Committee; member Iowa State University Century Club; charter member Estherville Rotary Club; member of Estherville Elks Club and Oak Hill Cemetery Board.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia, Estherville; one daughter, Mrs. Douglas (Carolyn) Meyer, Humboldt; three grandchildren: Ted, Tammy and Tracy Meyer, Humboldt; one brother, Dave Everds, Long View, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers and two sisters. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 25, 1983)
