Estherville – Funeral services for Fred Elwood, 86, of Estherville, will be held at 2 p.m. on Mon., Aug 24, 1998, at the United Methodist Church in Estherville with the Rev. Larry Willey officiating. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Estherville. He died Thursday [August 20, 1998] at Holy Family Health Services in Estherville.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

He was born on July 2, 1912, in Palo Alto County, the son of Walter Riley and Bessie (Craven) Elwood. He received his education in the Estherville schools graduating from Estherville High School in 1933. He then attended Estherville Junior College graduating in 1935.

On April 15, 1938, he was united in marriage to Bernice A. Johnson in Armstrong. He was employed with the Prudential Life Insurance Company for 30 years, retiring in July of 1974.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Estherville.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice “Bea” Elwood of Estherville; son, Dan F. Elwood of Madison, Minn.; daughter, Mrs. Gary (Dee Ann) Spillman of Northfield, Minn.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Orlin of Lancaster, Calif.; Harold of Yuma, Ariz.; Eldon of Okoboji; Kenneth of Miles City, Mont.; sisters, Alice Smith of Lake Wilson, Minn.; and Mrs. Kenneth (Marion) Booth of Gassville, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by one infant son; his parents and two brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 22, 1998)
