Funeral services for Mrs. S.F. Elwood were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Methodist church with Rev. Fred W. Ortmeyer officiating.

She passed away at her home on 620 West First Street south Thursday [February 12, 1942] morning at 2:17 after an illness of many months which became more serious the past two weeks.

The body was brought home from the Mahlum Anderson Funeral Home Friday afternoon A short service was held at the home at 2 o’clock Saturday.

At the church Rev. Orthmeyer read part of the 14th chapter of John and the 23rd Psalm. He spoke of the home prepared for those who believe and find joy in the service of the Lord, and spoke of the beautiful life of faith and many years of service of the deceased. He closed with the reading of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s “Crossing the Bar.”

The hymns “Safe in the Arms of Jesus”, “Home of the Soul” and “Jesus Savior Pilot Me” requested by the family were beautifully sung by Mrs. J. Freman VanderPloeg and Mrs. Stanley Larson accompanied by Mrs. Dorothy Gronstal.

The pallbearers were Howard Bammer, Walter Schildnecht, Walter Schultz, Frank Plymesser, Herb Webber and Charles Walz.

Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery.

Myrtle R. Davis Elwood was born February 2, 1881 near Rochester, Minnesota, and passed away at her home at the age of 61 years and ten days.

She was the daughter of John Davis, but was reared by an aunt and uncle at Boyden, Iowa where she received her education and taught school for a time.

She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church at Boyden in which she took a very active part and always kept her membership active as she moved from place to place. After moving to Montana she joined the Van Orsdel Methodist church at Havre in which she had a very active part until failing health prevented. During these years she served as president of the Missionary society, leader of a ladies aid circle, superintendent of a department of the Sunday school , superintendent of the Home Department of the Sunday School, Cradle Roll superintendent, and taught Sunday school classes through the years.

She was married to Sherman Floyd Elwood December 25, 1900 at Boyden, Iowa. For a time they made their home at Emmetsburg, later moving to Boyden, then to Sedan, Minn.; Lakoto, N.D.; and moved to a homestead near Kremlin, Montana in 1910 and to Havre, Montana in 1915 where she made her home until August, 1941, when she and Mr. Elwood moved to Estherville to make their home with their daughter, Mrs. Carl W. Walz.

To this union six children were born, three infant sons and a three years old son preceding her in death, leaving two surviving daughters.

She is survived by her husband, Sherman F. Elwood; and two daughters, Miss Mabel Elwood of Havre, Montana and Mrs. Carl W. Walz of Estherville; and a son-in-law, Carl Walz, and three step grandchildren, Jimmy, Irene and Donald Walz. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, February 17, 1942)
