Laurel Marie Lewallen was born two miles west of Woodburn, Aug. 19, 1909, and when about two months old the family moved to the northern part of the state and were living near Estherville at the time of the baby’s death. Laurel was a perfectly normal child, healthy and happy, and gave promise of a bright girlhood, but a sudden accident snatched her from the loving embrace of her fond parents, and has filled their hearts with grief. She was playing in the barn at her home on Tuesday, July 1st, when a tool box fell from a shelf upon her little body, inflicting such injuries that she died about twenty minutes later. Her last conscious act was to take a drink of water from her mother, then she stretched her little body on the sofa, and in a few moments the spirit took its flight.

She leaves four older brothers, a baby sister, loving parents, relatives and friends to mourn her loss. She is safe in the arms of Jesus.

E’re sin could blight, or sorrow fade,
Death came with friendly care;
To heaven convey the opening bud,
And bid it blossom there.

Age at death, July 1st, 1913, 3 years, 10 months and 12 days. Funeral services were held at the Woodburn M.E. church, July 3rd, and the little body was laid to rest in the Felgon cemetery, Rev. E. Durant officiating. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, July 8, 1913)
