Estherville – Services for Mrs. Millie Ethel Shirley, 101, will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Chapel with Dr. Robert Kunz officiating. Interment will be in East Side Cemetery. She died Monday, Feb. 20, 1989 at Holy Family Hospital.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-9 p.m. Thursday.

She was born August 18, 1887 at Poila, Ind., the daughter of Mayfield and Mary Elizabeth (Hayes) Wires, and attended rural schools in Indiana. On Dec. 10, 1907 she married Bert Shirley at Poila. The couple lived in Indiana until 1909 when they moved to Illinois; they moved to rural Estherville in 1920. They farmed until moving into Estherville in 1939, where he worked for Iowa Trust & Saving Bank, later at the Daily News until retiring. She was a member of First Christian Church and CWF.

Survivors include three daughters: Fern Wilson, Tipton; Mrs. Harley (Phyllis) Higley, Estherville and Mrs. Bernard (Lena) Jansen, Fair Oaks, Calif.; five grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephew.

She was preceded in death by her husband Oct. 11, 1972; parents; brother; grandchild and two great-grandchildren. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February 22, 1989)
