Gruver youth killed in gun mishap
An 11-year-old Gruver youth died Saturday as the result of an accidental gunshot wound suffered while hunting.

Nicholas James Tirevold, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arlan Tirevold, was among a part hunting coyotes northeast of Graettinger. According to available information, the boy was struck in the neck by a shot from a high-powered rifle and died at the scene.

The incident was investigated by the Emmet County Sheriff’s department , the Department of Natural Resources and the Iowa Highway Patrol. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 28, 1991)

Gruver – Services for Nicholas James Tirevold, 11, of Gruver will be held Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church with the Reverence David Wendell officiating. Interment will follow at the East Side Cemetery. Friends may call 4-9:00 p.m. Monday at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville. He died Saturday, Jan. 26 as the result of a hunting accident.

Nicholas was born Oct. 12, 1979 in Estherville, the son of Arlen and Kathleen Tirevold. He was in the fifth grade at Lincoln Central School and has lived with his family in the Estherville and Gruver areas. He enjoyed outdoor sports, especially golf, hunting, fishing and baseball. He took pride in being a delivery boy for the Daily News Shoppers and mowing lawns for people.

He is survived by his parents, his grandparents: Mr. and Mrs. Bernard (Herb) Nielsen, Estherville and Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Tirevold, Gruver; his great grandmother, Mrs. Flossie Jensen, Estherville; one brother Brad and one sister, Kelly Jo.
