Last Rites for Mrs. Thorndyke Held Sunday
Mrs. Fred A Thorndyke, 80, resident of Estherville for 44 years died at the home of her daughter Mrs. F.E. Stone at Ft. Dodge last Thursday [September 12, 1940] after a short illness.

Born Lydia Marie Southwell, daughter of Charles and Eliza Southwell on July 22 [1860] at Portage City, Wis., the deceased woman spent her childhood in that vicinity but moved with the family to Iowa. On Feb. 8, 1877 she was married at West Side to Fred A. Thorndyke with whom she moved to vicinity of Verona, Ill. From that point in 1896 she moved with her husband and family to Estherville. After the death of Mr. Thorndyke, six years ago, she gave up her home in Estherville and lived in Ft. Dodge.

Surviving Mrs. Thorndyke are one son Wilbur of Estherville and four daughters Mrs. Stone, Fort Dodge, Mrs. Fred Himebauch, Mrs. Roy Arnett, and Mrs. Georgetta McCarty all of Chicago. There are nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Last Rites Sunday
Funeral services were held in Estherville Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Mahlum and Anderson chapel and at two-thirty at the Methodist church. Rev. Fred Ortmeyer conducted the services. Burial was made in East Side cemetery.

Mrs. Thorndyke had been a member of the local Methodist church for 43 years having united with the church in her childhood. She was a sincere and consistent Christian making her church a part of her daily life. Her home, too, was deeply and vitally interesting to her but she found time in her long and useful life to be a good neighbor and good citizen. Hundreds of local residents carry deep in their hearts memories of the kind things she had done for them. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, September 17, 1940)

Mrs. Thorndyke, Former Resident, Died at Ft. Dodge
Mrs. Fred A. Thorndyke passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Stone, at Fort Dodge last Thursday. Mrs. Thorndyke was 80 years of age at the time of her death. She was a resident of Estherville for 44 years.

Mrs. Thorndyke was a woman it was a pleasure to have known. A fine mother and neighbor, kind and considerate to all and beloved by all who knew her.

The funeral services were held in this city on Sunday afternoon at two at the Mahlum and Anderson chapel and at the Methodist church at 2:30, the Rev. Fred Ortmeyer officiating. Interment was made in the family lot in the East Side cemetery.

She leaves to mourn her death her son, Wilbur, of this city and four daughters, Mrs. Fred Stone of Fort Dodge, Mrs. Fred Heimbaugh, Mrs. Roy Arnet and Mrs. Georgietta McCarty of Chicago.
