Accident Claims Life of an Estherville Man
An accident that occurred on early Saturday morning has taken the life of an Estherville youth. Kevin Dean Smith, 19, was killed in the single-car accident. The Emmet County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating.

According to the Sheriff’s office, Smith had been traveling on Highway 4 about a mile and a half north or the Emmet-Palo Alto county line when the accident occurred sometime between 2 and 6 a.m His vehicle was northbound on the highway when it left the roadway and vaulted a creek bed and struck the creek embankment on the opposite side. Smith had no passengers in the vehicle.

The accident was discovered by a passing motorist about 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

Assisting in the accident was the Estherville Ambulance Service, the Estherville Fire Department Jaws of Life and Motor Inn Wrecker Service.

The vehicle Smith was driving was a 1974 two-door Mercury, which was totaled in the crash. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 2, 1987)

Estherville – Services for Kevin Dean Smith, 19, of Estherville, will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Estherville Lutheran Church with pastor Norman Omodt officiating. Interment will be in East Side Cemetery. Smith died Saturday.

Friends may call at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday.

He was born May 8, 1967, in Estherville, the son of Gary Dean Smith and Sandra (Stiner) Smith. He graduated in 1985 from Estherville High School and attended Iowa Lakes Community College in 1986.

Smith lived most of his life in Estherville. During his high 4chool days, he worked for Estherville Foods and during the summer months he was a custodian at Estherville Middle School. He loved music. He sold and installed stereo equipment and was a member of “Super System”, a mobile rock show. After attending ILCC, he worked for Arts-Way Manufacturing in Armstrong and was employed by Glasstite, Inc., of Dunnell, Minn. Smith was a member of Estherville Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his parents Gary and Sandy Smith of Estherville; maternal grandmother, Charlotte Stiner of Estherville; paternal grandmother, Lorraine Smith of Estherville, maternal great-grandmother Esther Erickson of Lakefield, Minn.; aunts and uncles Warren and Joyce Stiner of Estherville, Bill Smith of Estherville, Dwight and Margaret Derrickson of Wallingford, Jack and Debbie Smith of Armstrong, and Jim Smith of Phoenix, Ariz.; cousins Brian and Jeff Stiner of Estherville, Billy Jo and Eric Smith of Ceylon, Minn., Steve and Christy Derrickson of Wallingford, Charles and Jamie Smith of Armstrong, and Pat and Bill Smith of Fairmont, Minn.; and several great uncles and aunts.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandfathers, maternal great-grandfather and paternal great-grandparents. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 2, 1987)
