Altamay H. Smith
Services for Altamay Smith, age 88, of Estherville were Feb. 14 at the United Methodist Church in Estherville with Pastor Don Johnson officiating. [dod February 11]

Altamay Smith was born August 11, 1908, in Estherville to Joseph and Tillie Johnson Aalborg. She received her education in the Estherville schools, graduating from Estherville High School in 19269 She then attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls, S.D. After college she worked in a local bank.

She married Orval “Abe” Smith on Aug. 2, 1928 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. After their marriage, the couple farmed near Estherville, Laurens, Gilmore City and Superior. Altamay took pride in being a wife, mother, grandmother, Norwegian, Methodist and republican. She was a member of the Superior Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and rural women’s clubs. Altamay was a loving caregiver to family members and also many elderly people. Among these were Mrs. L.M. Christensen, Lloyd and Arlene Stockdale, and Kate Cornwall.

Abe and Altamay retired to Estherville in 1962 and following her husband’s death in 1973, she moved to Superior. In 1993, she moved to Estherville. Altamay and her husband were buried on Valentine’s Day 24 years apart.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, one sister a granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.

Left as survivors are sons, Jerry Smith and wife, Nita of Presho, So. Dak. and Roger Smith of Estherville; daughters, Verla Petersen and husband, Don of Estherville; Ardis Hanson and husband, Alan of Estherville; and Charlene Thomsen and husband, Stan of Spirit Lake; 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and a sister, Vera Austin, Spencer.

Burial was at East Side Cemtery, Estherville, with Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Homes, Inc., Estherville in charge of arrangements. (Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, IA, February 20, 1997)
